Really there's plenty you could get her without going wrong. Best bet is go to the mall or somehting and just walk around until somehting catches your eye, we don't really know your GF so we could say

BUY HER A DIAMOND NECKLACE!
When she really wants a heart shaped ring.

I actually asked my sister; now she things I courting some poor lass.
Basically, echoing Kr!sP's idea, jewellry a safe road. Keep it tasteful though, and nothing to lovey-dovey at the same time. The problem here is, of course, budget.
However when money is running low, there's always the emergency option.

I prefer that you get her something that can be remembered for ever and ever, some thing that isn't material. (No not sex. Unless she wants it. ;D) Anyways, the Beatles said, "Money can't buy me love" And it's true. What you should do is, get your favorite cologne/axe/perfume/shower/sweat and put it on a cute little pillow or something, and give it to her, so when she sleeps with it, she always think of you, before bed, after bed, during bed, and naptime. Day in, Day out.

As one of the only girls on this forum, it's time for my opinion to save that day. ;D

The one-year anniversary is a very important time, but of course it's not like marriage or anything. So it should be important, but not too important. Jewlery would be a good choice, but you don't need to spend a ton of money on it. Just as long as it's something you know she'll like.

Zerachial actually had a good idea, a pillow would be pretty hardcore. The scent would easily fade off, but it would still remind her of you when she went to bed. ;o

My last idea would be to think of all the little things she likes (Chocolate, candy, cosmetics, makeup, maybe a teddy bear, etc.) and give her a lovely little basket of goodies. Then you can even add a nice card and stuff.

...Yeah, that's about all I can think of. Keep in mind that I've never had a boyfriend, so I may not know exactly what would be best for such an occasion. Just get her whatever you feel is best to get her. <3

^ Marthy has a huge point there. Lots of those were things I had in mind when I pulled up this thread. But, there's always something easy, like a card to start out with, to butter it up. And then keep it going by saying it's a "surprise" and leave for a while, really getting it all intense or something like that. Come back with something huge, like a necklace. That's how my relationshipped friends do it. Or, just the card works xD
