Yeah he did. It was towards the end of Johto. He left him at this canyon place with a girl that raised dozens of Charizard's. In Pokemon Movie 3 with Entei Charizard saw what was happening, goes to save Ash, then returns to the canyon. Yeah, I watched Pokemon a lot when I was little.

Close but to bad your wrong to charizard comes back to ash when ever he is in deep danger charizard is still his he just leaves at the place which is lance's sister's place where they train dragons and charizards so charizard gets stronger and in some of the recent episodes ash even did gym battles with charizard.
