Not everyone is still in school, so finding someone to randomly play an online match with is limited.

The main purpose for the chat is to instantly find online players.

A forum won't work because its not instant. An IM client would... but again you have to have peoples user names to play. Its not random.

Chat is the only solution to see if check who is currently online and willing to play a specific game.
