Dragonball, The Official Live Action Movie Discussion.
Recall that one rumor? back in 1999-2000? Don't remember? Well way back then is when it sparked; the very first Rumors of a live action Dragonball Z movie. I was of course one of those excited people, what can I say? I am an avid Dragonball Z fan (Infact it is the Anime that got me hooked). But there were worries, I cannot deny that; with technologies in movies they way they were back then? I figured, well how in the world would they do this? It would be too much work.
Finally after all those rumors, I heard that it had been officially confirmed, ecstatic though I was, I couldn't help but wonder what will they do! Then it came...months and months went by, and guess what? No word. The whole project as far as I was concerned was dropped, all by Fox confirming that they were never in the process of making it, all hope was lost once more. What was a guy to do? Torn once more, I gave up hope. Most fans probably did.
Ahh, but then on Feburary 2004, news broke out about Ben Ramsey writing up a script for the movie, already casting roles for the parts of Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta. This information sparked my interest again, why? Well obviously this screen writer wanted this movie to happen, and it seemed that Fox had confirmed that this script was true. Of course, I was wondering....Hugh Jackman as Goku? Sam Wheeler as Piccolo? (No one knows who he is, but the picture of him was so convincing).
This would be the Picture I'm talking about
They also had asked another to be Vegeta, but I quite frankly forgot who it was. It was at this point that Youtube, and other websites were being flooded with possible actors to cast the role. It was evident the public was getting excited as it seemed the rumors were finally being put to a hault, and the movie was coming to fruition. Then it happened again.....days....months...and eventually years went by. No word had been mentioned; nada, zilch, zero. You can believe I was rather angry, the THIRD time my dream of seeing a live action crushed. Eventually I got over it, thinking well this never is going to happen, how the heck would it? The Technology is not there yet, Fox just doesn't want to do it, and the whole reason behind the 'hault' was supposedly because Hugh Jackman got fired. Likely story? Not.
So then there I was, November 2007, sitting in the library during college break hours, surfing the web. What did I come across, well believe me I didn't believe it at first, because of all the rumors. I came across this website confirming for a fact that Dragonball Z the live action movie would be starting production in the fall (Granted I read this in November, so I was clueless). I figured, this is just bogus, but I kept reading it anyway. By the end of the article, the library had to tell me to be quiet, why? I was screaming with excitement. literally, to hear that Fox had finally confirmed that the movie was going into production and that it was no lie. 100 million dollars was the trick that did me in, this wasn't fake at all. Finally my favourite Anime series of all time, was getting what it rightfully deserved. A live action flick.
But just as the new year rolls around, again...well they brought news that James Wong will be the director, and casting roles were being set. (I was wondering "why? weren't they supposed to start in the fall of this year?", keep in mind this was in 2007). So I got a bit more suspicious, and unlucky for me, I could not find anymore information, leaving me pacing.
So finally 2008 arrives, i'm surfing through the net during college breaks again (ironically in the same spot), and come across information, it is now a 'DRAGONBALL MOVIE' I had to admit, I was a bit disappointed, but then again it wouldn't be right to start in the middle of the series now would it? So now it has been confirmed. Dragonball the Live Action movie is set to release for August 15th, 2008; no lie, no joke. It's the real deal.
My thoughts on the current information of the movie.
Well I (As I am sure), as well as many Dragonball fans will watch this movie. It doesn't matter if the information sounds sketchy, no it doesn't. Why? Because a true fan goes no matter what. When I first heard about the casting role, I figured, well James Marsters (Played Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as Piccolo would be excellent! He's got that quality, in him to play a villainous demon king. But as for Goku....well Justin Chatwin...hmm... you know he's best for his roles in Invisible, and War of the Worlds...but does he fit the description of a teenage Goku? Well I still have yet to believe if he could really play the part.
That isn't what caught my attention though..it's this, Teto...who the heck is Teto? He was never in Dragonball. So I figured, maybe James Wong wanted to add in a brand new character, that's all good and fine..but then I heard this.
"Teto, will be playing as Goku's Best friend in Highschool"
.......High School? Best Friend?
You have got to be kidding me, Krillen is his best friend, and Goku NEVER went to High School or had any education for that matter. This has me worried, where is Krillen? He's the staple of the series, without Krillen, Goku never becomes a Super Saiyajin..I have some doubts about this movie but I will see. I am still going to attend, why wouldn't I? But it might surprise me, who knows. It IS supposed to be this years summer block buster (with the $100,000,000 budget tagged onto it). Still don't believe me? Check this source out.
