I am going to tell you like I have learned by surfing the net about it, the sensor bar in the Wiimote is one of the lowest sensors that are on the market.

If you become out of range with the Wii mote or leave it stagnant for so long, it loses the place where it finds the signal, and remains dormant. That is where the "Smacking up against the chair" idea comes into play :)
