HD-DVD Quits, Blu-Ray Wins

Toshiba said Tuesday it will no longer develop, make or market HD DVD players and recorders, handing a victory to rival Blu-ray disc technology in the format battle for next-generation video.

"We concluded that a swift decision would be best," Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida told reporters at his company's Tokyo offices.

The move would make Blu-ray — backed by Sony Corp., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., which makes Panasonic brand products, and five major Hollywood movie studios — the winner in the battle over high-definition DVD formatting that began several years ago.

What do you all think about this? I figured HD-DVD would win out after the failure Sony experienced with previous video formats (i.e. Beta-Max and UMD). Does anyone have an HD-DVD currently and will this seriously effect how you will by next-gen movies in the future?

It is a bad thing for Toshiba, one because some people cannot afford the hi-price Blue rays.

The decision to me, was a bad one, but they might have more to it than just the sells and the concern of those who are "less fortunate" than others.

Well anyways, I think it is a bad idea.

I am glad that Blu-ray won. Even though HD-dvd was cheaper it was limited. Blu-ray will be able to advance with the movie industry to definitions better than 1080i/p because of the amount of memory on the disk. The prices for Blu-ray will go down. New technology is always expensive but the prices drop eventually.

This is America, no one cares about the less fortunate, the super rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Blu Ray FTW anyway!

Five years? Try thirteen years. DVD became the standard in 1995.
