Problem not dust/smoke tested laser
I, like many of you was not convinced that the error was due to dust. I happen to know a good laser can read a disc even if covered in a thin layer of yellow smoke resin. Since my warranty was void already I just said screw it and opened up my wii to do some experimenting.
I removed the laser from the wii and properly soldered it in an old dvd player that I no longer care about. I looked the laser over first and could see no signs of dust or smoke discoloration. My first test was to see if it could read a single layer disc so I would know that it was properly seated into the DVD player. I got out a DVD I made on a single layer and it played it perfectly. My next test was to see if it could handle a dual layer DVD and as I suspected it would not load. Tests done I now needed to repair my wii. I knew I couldn't just put the unable to load smash laser back in, and the laser on the DVD player was so cheap and old. I then took the laser out of my computer's 2nd dvd drive (which I barley use anyway) and put it in the wii. My wii now loads up smash bros fine. It is my understanding that this problem has nothing to do with dust and the laser in the wii simply was not made to read dual layers. My theory is that a box of the wrong lasers somehow got mixed in with the Wii lasers and they were making them so fast no one noticed. That or Nintendo decided they could buy the lasers cheaper in a year and replace them later saving them millions. Having grown up with them I have much love and respect for Nintendo. I just hope they come out and tell everyone why this is really happening, because it is NOT dust/smoke. |
