It depends what types you're good with. Rayquaza is the lead Pokemon in my party. I can use Outrage without him going confused, and his moves are really strong. Sceptile has good leaf blade and he knows a Fly type move, so he's good for me. Carry one Pokemon that knows all the Water HMs. I try and carry all types with me for any battle. Try and keep your party to have at least one move per type.

It all depends on your starter. You dont want 2 of the same type in a party. Some of mine were:
Blue version-Blastoise, Aerodactyl, Sandslash, Haunter, Magmar, and Golduck (for payday)
Sapphire-Blaziken, Pelliper, Kyogre, Raquaza, Vileploom, and Relicanth
Emerald-Swampert, Electrode (speedy), Swellow, Raquaza, Groudon, and Kyogre
Diamond-Infernape, Staraptor, Floatzel, Electrode, Dialga, and Azelf

I would also reccomend having a variety of moves.

personally i dont like using Legendaries cause there too cheap thats why i have
for my Diamond-Blaziken, Charizard, Scizor, Garchomp, Electivire, and Milotic

Not necessarily in that order cause i was listing them off the top of my head
